Selecting Electrical Contractors
Getting the wrong contractor can potentially make a problem go from bad to morphing into a nightmare. Bad electrical work can cost a lot of money and fixing shoddy workmanship can literally costs a person a fortune.
It is not just the money aspect. There are safety concerns to think about. Many fires have been caused by inexperienced electricians or contractors skipping steps to save a little money. There are some cases where this has ultimately lead to injury or death.
Take your time and hire the right company for the job. Wiring a house for any reason is important and you want to make certain you have the right people doing it.
Ask questions of people you know. There is someone who you are acquainted with who has had some type of electrical work done in the last five years. Who did they go with? What was their personal experience? People always like to talk about someone who has done a good job for them. They will be happy to tell you. A good electrician always has work and is always booked up. Rarely ever does he have to do much advertising because people do it for him.
You need to understand how good electricians like to get paid. When they finish a smaller type job that lasts only several days or less you need to have the check ready. If they do their job properly and on time you need to do your part. For larger jobs you pay an electrician in increments. The whole project is split up in sections and when a certain percentage of the work is completed you give him or the company the corresponding payment. By the time the last job is complete they should have received 100% of the total price that was agreed to.
Shop around a little if possible. Get several quotes from several electricians and companies. Do not just go solely on price. Watch out for cheap labor. You will pay way more in the end than you believe you are saving now. There are a lot of "Mickey Mouse" start up companies that offer bargain basement prices but their work is less than what is considered standard. This is why talking to their past customers is so important.
Make certain he has all the necessary documents. Do not just assume he does. He should have a license to do business as a contractor, have general liability insurance, have workers compensation insurance (if he has employees), and be bonded in some states. It may not hurt to even ask for his business license number if you do not know him. Again, do not assume he has all these things. Its a cliche but it is better to be safe than sorry.
Check the Better Business Bureau and see if he or the electrical company is there. Its expensive to get on here but usually the companies listed here do everything in their power to stay in good standing because a negative comment can really hurt them. If there is a problem the companies who are members of the BBB will be more inclined to resolve and fix it.
Put the company's name in Google and see if anyone has anything good or bad to say about them. There are tons of forums where people rant and rave about businesses they like and hate. You might see someone who said they had a very bad experience with this particular company or someone who named their second son after the guy who who wired their bedroom. It never hurts to do this and its takes no time at all.
Follow these steps and you will pick out a decent electrician or electrical contractor. This work is crucial to any well built structure so make its done right. Its best not to rush the selection process and to ask a lot of questions of the person who will be working on your house.
